  COUSINS


  Cadet Jaqueline Beverly Stanard* b. on April 27, 1845 in Orange Co, Va. On Jan 30, 1863 Stanard started school at VMI as a Private. He was in Co. B. On May 15, 1864 at the age of 19 he was mortally wounded in the Orchard at the battle of New Market, Va. His friend and roomate was John S. Wise. AKA Jack to his fellow cadets and Bev to his family. Buried in the Bradbury-Stanard lot in Graham Cemetery in Orange Co, Va.

  Cadet David M. Anderson* b. 1842 Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1864. Enlisted on June 30, 1862 as a Private into Co. K, 2nd Va Cavalry. In 1862 he had been detailed to hosp duty. Often in hosp with various ailments including "diarrhea anddiphtheria". On Mar 1, 1863 wounded at Kelly's Ford. On Mar 1, 1864 transferred to Co. A, 1st MO Cavalry. On April 25, 1865 paroled in Ashland as a member of the 2nd Va Cavarly. In Oct 1867 he died of yellow fever in Shreveport, LA.

  Cadet Samuel Selden Brooke Jr.* b. Nov 10, 1841 Virginia Military Institute, Enrolled at the Virginia Military Institute in July 1857 and was a cadet for one year. He subsequently attended the University of Virginia. Enlisted on Apr 21, 1861 as a Private into Co. I, 47th Va Infantry. On May 12, 1861 promoted to 2nd Lieut. On Feb 28, 1862 On rolls. On March 15, 1862 Absent, sick. On May 5, 1862 Absent, sick. On May 20, 1862 promoted to Capt. On Oct 15, 1862 Absent, sick. On March 15, 1863 Requested fuel for 1 Capt. and 18 men. On Oct 15, 1863 Requested fuel. On Nov 3, 1864 Detailed to recruiting duty at Camp Lee, Va. On Dec 31, 1864 On rolls. On April 30, 1865 Paroled at Ashland, Va.

  Cadet James McDowell Carrington* b. on Sept 11, 1838 in Botetourt Co, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1864-MS Enlisted on March 15, 1862 at Charlottesville, Va he was commissioned into Charlt'ville VA Light Artillery. On March 15, 1862 elected Capt of Capt J. M. Carrington's Co, Va Lt Artillery ( Chrlsvl Artillery Co. E, 31st Va Artillery Batln). On Jan 1, 1863 Detailed as Acting Chief of Artillery. On March 3, 1863 Returned. On Dec 31, 1863 Furloughed. Jan 15, 1864 Returned. On May 12, 1864 POW at Spotsylvania Court House, Va attained rank of Major, but date of rank uncertain. On May 20, 1864 Confined at Fort Delaware, DE. On Aug 20, 1864 Confined at Hilton Head, SC. Oct 20, 1864 Confined at Fort Pulaski, GA. On Jan 1, 1865 Confined at Hilton Head, SC. On March 12, 1865 Confined at Fort Delaware, DE. On June 9, 1865 Oath Allegiance at Fort Delaware, DE "Released". He was described as 6' 1.0", light complexion, grey eyes, dark hair. On May 2, 1911 he died in Providence Hospital, Washington, DC and is Buried in Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

  Cadet Clayton Glanville Coleman b. in 1840 in Roxbury, New Kent Co, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1859. physician, He entered VMI in July 1856 but did not graduate. After leaving VMI in 1858, he attended the University of Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia, from which he was graduated in March 1861. He served as Lt. Col., 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment (1861-1862) and after September 1862 as a physician in the Confederate Medical Department. On October 07, 1908 he died.

  Cadet Henry Eaton Coleman* b. on Jan 5, 1837 in Halifax Co, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1855. Enlisted on Apr 26, 1861 at Granville County, Nc into the Co. B, 12th Nc Infantry at the age of 24 years old. On Apr 26, 1861 he was promoted to Capt. On May 1, 1862 He was discharged for defeated for reelection. On May 4, 1863 he was commissioned into Field & Staff 12th NC Infantry. On Aug 11, 1863 he was promoted to Colonel. On May 2, 1864 Wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, Va. Aide-de-camp Brig Genl Alfred Iverson's staff. On Dec 30, 1864 Absent wounded. On June 25, 1890 he died in Halifax Co, Va.

  Cadet John James Coleman* b. on May 21, 1844 in at Jerdone Castle, Louisa County, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1867. New Market Cadet, Private, Co. D. Never married, no children. Career: Farmer. On August 11, 1914 he died in Williamsburg, Va.

  Cadet William Arthur Coleman* b. on February 01, 1843 in Richmond, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1864 Enlisted as a Adjutant at the age of 20 years old. On Oct 7, 1861 on rolls. On Jan 11, 1862 on rolls. On Jan 23, 1862 Absent at Nashville, TN. On Feb 16, 1862 POW. On March 1, 1862 Confined at Camp Chase, OH. On Apr 24, 1862 Confined at Johnson's Island, OH. On Sept 1, 1862 Transferred to Vicksburg, MS "arrived for exchange". On Sept 19, 1862 Paroled. On Sept 15, 1863 he mustered into Co. E, 2nd Va Cavalry. On Apr 15, 1864 He was discharged. On Apr 30, 1864 On rolls. He also had service in Field & Staff 50th, VA Infantry estimated day of discharge, failed reelection. On Apr 15, 1865 Oath Allegiance at Lynchburg, VA. On July 20, 1890 he died of tuberculosis in Greenville, SC.

  Cadet James Parke Corbin Jr* b. on September 27, 1847 in Richmond, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1867 New Market Cadet, Private, Co. D.

  Colonel. James Keith Marshall* b. on April 25, 1843 in Audley, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1860. Enlisted on April 29, 1861 at Chowan County, NC into Co. M, 1st NC Infantry. On May 25, 1861 promoted to Capt. On Nov 12, 1861 he was Mustered Out of service with unit a 6-mo regt. On April 23, 1862 promoted to Colonel as of Co. S, 52nd Inf Regmt and he was commissioned into Field & Staff NC 52nd Infantry. Commanded Brig. Genl. J. J. Pettigrew at Gettysburg. On July 3, 1863 he shot in the forehead and expired immediately in Pickett's Charge "right up at the Stonewall" at Gettysburg, Pa.

  Corporal. Jaquelin Ambler Marshall* b. on April 05, 1844 in Audley, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1849. Enlisted on Nov 1, 1861 at Markham, Va as a Corporal into Fauquier Va Light Artillery at the age of 21 years old. On April 19, 1863 POW at Suffolk, Va. On April 21, 1863 Paroled at Fort Monroe, Va. On Feb 15, 1865 Promoted to Sergt. On June 18, 1864 he was Shot through left lung at Petersburg, Va. On Feb 15, 1865 Absent, wounded. On April 22, 1865 Paroled at Winchester, Va. He was described as 5' 9.0", light complexion, blue eyes, light hair. On Nov 27, 1917 he died. Buried in Leeds Episcopal Cemetery near Markham, Va.

  Cadet Samuel Preston Gresham b. on Feb. 14, 1836 in Lancaster Co. Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1856 Enlisted on June 1, 1861 as a Captain he was commissioned into Co. F, 47th Va Infantry. On June 30, 1862 Wounded in the shoulder at Frayer's Farm and contracted Typhoid Fever while still recovering from shoulder wound. On Oct 3, 1861 Issued Uniforms for 56 men. On March 15, 1862 On rolls. On July 15, 1862 Absent, sick. On Sept. 1862 Returned. On Dec 30, 1862 Furloughed For 30 days. On Dec 31, 1862 Absent, sick. On Feb 25, 1863 He was Dropped for going AWOL. There was a Sam'l P. Gresham who enlisted at Camp Elzy as a Private in Co. C. of 24th Va. Cavalry. On May 17, 1918 he died in Lancaster Co, Va.

  Cadet George Taylor Lee* b. on March 08, 1848 in Richmond, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1867 New Market Cadet, Private, Co. B. With Corps in Richmond trenches until disbanded on April 2, 1865. He was described as 5'10", light complexion. In 1929 admitted to Soldier's Home in Richmond, Va. On May 23, 1933 he died.

  Cadet William Fitzhugh Lee* b. on April 27, 1832 in Richmond, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1853. Lt. Col. 33rd VA Infantry. 3 years in the US Army. On June 30, 1855 2nd Lt of the 2nd US Infantry. On April 30, 1861 resigned. By July 1861 was Capt and temporaily asgnd to 33rd Va Infantry. On July 21, 1861 MWIA in the breast Battle of 1st Bull Run "1st Manassas" while acting as "field lieutenant-colonel" of the regt. On July 29, 1861 he died of his wounds.

  Cadet Daniel Murray Lee* b. on July 14, 1843 in Alexandria, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1867. Joined Confederate States Navy in July 1861 as Acting Midshipman. On June 2, 1863 to Midshipman. In 1864 passed Midshipman served with Naval squadrons at Richmond and Charleston SC. He was at Drewry's Bluff naval baty. Also Served on Richmond, Chicora, Patrick Henry, and Chickamauga. He was with the Naval Brig in Appomattox Campaign. He escaped from Sayler's Creek. Joined staff of Major. Genl. Robert E, Lee as acting ADC. On April 13, 1865 he surrendered at Meadow Farm, Va. In 1892 on board of Visitors, Soldier's Home in Richmond, Va. On Dec 16, 1916 he died in Highland Home ", Stafford Co., Va.

  Cadet Robert Fleming Lee* b. on February 13, 1849 in Alexandria, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1867 New Market Cadet; Private, Co. C but left on guard duty at VMI. "The second youngest member of the New Market Corps". With Corps in Richmond trenches until Nov 1864. On Nov 23, 1913 he died in Richmond, Va and is Buried in Ivy Cemetery, Alexanderia, Va.

  Cadet George Washington Lewis* b. on February 12, 1829 in Alexandria, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1849. On March 3, 1862 Major and ADC to Gen. A. L. Lewis (LA state forces). On Feb 5, 1885 he died. Buried at Green Hill Cemetery.

  Cadet William Lynn Lewis* b. on June 14, 1844 in Orangeburg, SC. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1867. New Market Cadet, Private, Co. A. On April 9, 1908 he died in Old Sweet Springs, W. Va. Buried at Green Hill Cemetery.

  Cadet Henry Llewellyn Daingerfield Lewis Sr* b. on April 25, 1841 in Audley, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1864. On June 2, 1861 asgnd to 27th Va Infantry as Cadet. Enlisted on Aug 11, 1861 he mustered into Co. D, 1st Va Cavalry. On Sept 12, 1861 He was transferred out and into Co. D, 6th Va Cavalry. Served J.E.B. Stuart's Staff. In 1861 Served as Drillmaster in Richmond, Va. Major on General Maury's Staff. On April 8, 1865 POW in Blakesly, AL While serving on General Liddell's Staff. He was discharged for promotion. On Dec 17, 1893 he died in Audley, Clarke County, Va. Buried in Grace Episcopal Cemetery, Berryville, Va.

  Cadet Martin Marshall* b. on June 27, 1846 in Vicksburg, Miss. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1864. Private in Co. D of the Corps of Cadets in the Battle of New Market. Was severely wounded during the Battle, part of his knee was shot off which ended his military career. On Sept 17, 1895 he died.

  Cadet William Nicholas Meriwether* b. on May 12, 1840 in Bedford County, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1864. In April 1861 left on guard detail at VMI. On May 14, 1861 promoted to Cpl of Cadets. On June 26, 1861 resigned. Enlisted on July 27, 1861 elected 1st Lt of Co. C, 58th Va Infantry. Detailed as Drillmaster & in Capt Jenkins Cavalry in Richmond, Va. On May 1, 1862 dropped. Remained with regt until fall of 1863. On Sept 1, 1863 elected 2nd Lt of Co. C, 21st Va Cavalry. In Jan-Feb 1865 in hosp. In Aug 5, 1918 he died in Eolia, Pike County, MO. Buried in Old Prairieville Cemetery, Eolia, Pike County, MO.

  Cadet James Hunter Minor Jr* b. on March 7, 1848 in Orange Court House, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1867. New Market Cadet, Private, Co. C. Enlisted on Jan 17, 1865 at Fisherville, Va into Charlt'ville Va Light Artillery. On Jan 10, 1865 Horse detail. On January 4, 1914 he died in Mexico, Mo. Buried in Elmwood Place.

  Cadet James Dunlop Moncure* b. on August 02, 1842 in Richmond, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1864. Enlisted on April 23, 1862 at Bowling Green, Va into Co. B, 9th Va Cavalry. On May 2, 1865 paroled at Ashland, Va. On Nov 10, 1898 he died in Williamsburg, Va. Buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va.

  Cadet Marshall Ambler Moncure* b. on October 23, 1840 in Richmond, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1865. Drilled recruits in Richmond in the Spring of 1861. Enlisted on March 6, 1862 at Camp Bate into Co. B, 9th Va Cavalry. On detached service in the spring of 1863. On June 24, 1863 wounded in the hand. On Jan. 18, 1900 he died in Raceway, Dinwiddie Co. Va.

  Cadet Thomas Jefferson Moncure* b. on November 12, 1832. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1853. In May 1861 wrote that as former state Cadet felt duty bound to serve in defense of state. In spring of 1862 Major of 179th Va Militia. Detailed to command militia at Camp Lee. In Jun 1862 Major and enrolling Officer for city of Richmond, Va. On April 6, 1864 apntd 1st Lt of Co. H, 1st CS Engr. In spring-summer of 1864 on special duty with McLaw's Div. Directed countermining efforts before the explosion of the Crater at Petersburg, Va. Paroled at Appomattox, Va as 1st Lt Co. H, 1st CS Engr. On Aug 28, 1912 killed by a horse in Stafford Co, Va.

  Cadet Charles Henry Campbell Preston* b. on September 12, 1840 in Abigdon, VA. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1862. Could have been exempt from service because of poor eyesight, but enlisted anyway on May 2, 1861 at New Garden as 1st Lieut. into Co I 37th Va Infantry. On Mar 23, 1862 wounded in action at the First Battle of Kernstown. On April 21, 1862 relieved from service. Captain and then Major for the 4th Virginia State Line 1862-63; At an unknown date, became Lieut. of Co. I 22nd Va. Cavalry; Captured Dec. 14, 1864 near Glade Spring; Federal authorities accused him of violating parole.

  Cadet James Tecumseh Preston* b. on April 01, 1822 in Washington Co., Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1844.

  Cadet Philip Beverly Stanard* b. on February 02, 1835 in Spotsylvania Co, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1856. Enlisted on May 27, 1861 in Richmond, Va as Capt of Co. C, 38th Battn VA Light Artillery. On July 30, 1862 he was promoted Major "Odnance Chief, A. P. Hill's Division". Also service in CS A.P. Hill's Division. On June 26, 1863 to Major. Paroled at Appomattox, Va. On May 16, 1865 signed individual parole at staunton, Va. He was described as 5'8 1/2", dark complexion, grey eyes, light hair. On march 6, 1878 he died.

  Cadet Thomas Dorsey Taliaferro* b. on Sept 10, 1831 in Upperville, Fauquier, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1852. Enlisted on July 7, 1861 elected Lt. Col. of the 20th Texas Cavalry. " Col T. C. Bass's Regt".

  Cadet Felix Taylor Taliaferro* b. on November 1845 in Orange Co. Court House, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1865. Enlisted Sept. 28, 1863 at Richmond, Va. into Co. D, 2nd Md. Cavalry Battalion; promoted to Sergeant at an unknown date; transferred to Co. B, 12th Va. Cavalry in Aug. 1864. On March 5, 1904 died in Elizabeth, NJ.

  Cadet William Tell Taliaferro* b. on Jan 09, 1826 in Lynchburg, Va. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1845. Enlisted on May 17, 1861 in Lynchburg, Va apntd 1st Lt of Co. B, 24th Va Infantry. On May 23, 1861 Apntd Adjt. On June 27, 1865 resigned of army. On October 03, 1878 he died in Rock Mount, Va.

  Cadet Edmund Taylor* b. on Sept 30, 1826 in Caroline Co. VA. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1844. Was 1st Lieut. of the Reserve Army of the Confederate States on duty in Richmond, Va.

  Cadet Fielding Lewis Taylor* b. on March 04, 1849 in Gloucester Co. VA. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1868. With Corps in Richmond trenches until disbanded on April 2, 1865. On March 24, 1923 he died in Gloucester Co. VA. Buried at Abingdon Episcopal Church in Gloucester, Va.

  Cadet Thomas Rowe Thornton* b. on October 30, 1830 in Rowe's Hill, Caroline Co., VA. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1852. Enlisted on July 23, 1861 at Bowling Green, VA into Caroline VA Light Artillery as a Captain. On Nov 23, 1864 Absent, sick with chronic diarrhoea. On Jan 15, 1865 Returned. On Feb 28, 1865 On rolls Present. On April 27, 1865 Oath Allegiance in Ashland, VA. In 1896 he died in St Louis, Missouri.

  Cadet Richard Blackburn Washington* b. on November 12, 1822. Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1843. Enlisted on April 18, 1861 at Charlestown, Va into Co. G, 2nd Va Infantry. On Aug 20, 1861 Absent, sick. On Oct 14, 1861 He was discharged.
