If you have any military information on My 2nd cousin 5 times removed Voltaire Jones Camden please send me e-mail to: ![]() Mr. E. J. Bosher Danville, VA. August 21st 1907 Dear Sir, Yours of the 17th to hand and reply will state after being discharged in 1861, that discharge continued in force until 1863 when all discharged men were required to appear before a board to be examined and if sufficiently recovered from disability were subject to military duty again. I reported and upon examination was ordered to report again in thirty days. This continued I think for as many as three times. A business matter called me to North Carolina. On that trip I was conscripted and sent to the army then in winter quarters at Orange, C.H. and assigned to a North Carolina regiment. I at once applied for a transfer to my old company which was Co. I, 49th VA Vol., but before it reached me, a detachment of NC troops were sent to meet a Federal raid then coming up the Valley from Harpers Ferry. We engaged them at Mt. Jackson and something like a hundred of captured and sent to Camp Chase. This was about the 21st of December 1863 and is why my name does not appear on the rolls on file at Washington. I have written some length in order that you may learn what became of me from that discharge to close of the war. Disability, contracted in the service in 1861, was so aggravated while in Federal prison, has now culminated in total disability and incapacitates me to earn a support. I have never asked the state for one cent until I made the application for admittance in the Soldier's home at Richmond. Hoping this will be satisfactory and bring an early reply as I am on charity of friends. I remain yours, Voltaire Jones Camden ![]() Confederate Veteran Voltaire Jones Camden Grave Site In Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. |
